Catalonian Sheepdog (Gos d'Atura Català) The Catalonian Sheepdog or Gos d’Atura Català has its origins in the Pyrenean Valleys from Catalonia, sharing lineages and many physical similarities with its cousins from the other side of the border, the French Pyrenean Sheepdogs. The origin of the breed goes back more than two thousand years ago, being descendant of the sheepdogs that worked with the livestock that went with the Roman Armies as provisioning during their campaigns. Anyway, it is not until the beginning of 20th Century when the breed, due to the work of few breeders, is officially recognized and its standard is drawn up. The Catalonian Sheepdog is a very popular breed in Spain, especially in Catalonia where it is still used for its original work, herding, even with the celebration of international competitions. Over the years, the breed has become famous also for its good level as a guardian. The Catalonian Sheepdog is one of the most popular Spanish breeds internationally speaking, due to its high intelligence and extraordinary temperament.
