Majorca Shepherd (Ca de Bestiar) The Majorca Shepherd Dog, or Ca de Bestiar, is an originary breed from the Balearic Islands and one of the most ancient Spanish breeds, keeping its original characteristics unchanged over the centuries. The historical origin of the Majorca Shepherd Dog is not documented, although its existence figures in the oldest traditions of the Islands. There are also some theories defending the arrival of the breed accompanying the Castilian shepherds and even its relationship, sustained in evident physical similarities, with the Cao de Castro Laboreiro that arrived to the Islands in the Portuguese fishing boats. Noble, rustic, brave and very faithful, the Majorca Shepherd Dog is still one of the favourite breeds of local shepherds in Balearic Islands. Not very popular out of the islands and almost unknown out of Spain, this singularity has been good for the preservation of the physical and temperamental characteristics of the breed. Despite its shortage, the breed is not in danger of extinction and is considered to be a national treasure in the Balearic Islands. Las razas caninas españolas - Spanish canine breeds 14
