Ratonero Valenciano (Gos Rater Valencià) The origins of the breed are very ancient, its existence being known since 16th century. It clearly seems to be a native breed with its own characteristics and a deep popular roots. The Ratonero Valenciano was always the dog accompanying growers and rice farmers in Valencia, helping to control rodents pests and also catching water rats in ditches and in La Albufera. Water rats were used as food in times of economic hardship. The Gos Rater Valencia has also been traditionally used as hunting dog and like family pet due to its excellent temperament, braveness and sturdiness despite its small size. At the end of 20th century, a recovery and recognising movement started. The first official concentration, of 23 dogs, was held during the Valencia Dog Show in 1994. Since then, the Club of Breed along with the Sociedad Valenciana de Fomento de las Razas Caninas has worked hardly for the official recognition of the breed by the Public Authorities and the R.S.C.E., which occurred in 2004.
