Libro Razas Españolas
Ratonero Bodeguero Andaluz Since late 17th century, many wine merchants and producers, tortoiseshell merchants and later employees of mining and railway companies arrived from England to Andalusia. Many of them came with their dogs, among which there were different kind of terriers, especially smooth-haired terriers. These dogs perfectly adapted to the area, finding a special place as rat catchers in stables and wineries, where those ones with most white in its coats where preferred. It is possible that they were crossed with local breeds until obtaining the current typology. Although it has always been popular in some areas of Andalusia, like Jerez de la Frontera, Puerto de Santa María, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and other areas in Cádiz province, the breed was not bred seriously and under a breeding program until the last decades of 20th century. In 1983, it was founded the Club Nacional del Perro Ratonero Bodeguero Andaluz, that catalyses the breed promotion and in 1997 the first breed standard was wrote, being officially recognised by the R.S.C.E. in 2000 in Jerez de la Frontera, birthplace of the breed.
