Majorcan Dogue (Ca de Bou) The Majorcan Dogue or Ca de Bou descended from some “war dogs” arrived to the Balearic Islands and the old Spanish Alanos that arrived with king James I The Conqueror in 1229. In 18th century the Britons presence in Balearic Islands was constant and very important, especially in Menorca, where they arrived with some of their most representative dog breeds such as Mastiffs or Bulldogs, used in crosses with the local catch dog, influencing greatly in the final conformation of the Majorcan Dogue or Ca de Bou. These different crosses and the acclimatization to the special conditions of the islands gave as a result an exceptional dog for cattle catch and herding, unique, distinctive and guarding and also a fierce and incorruptible defender of the family. For centuries, the breed has exclusively been located in its original area, being not very known in Spain and even less out of the country, despite the present existence of important breeding focuses in countries like Russia, where its popularity increases day by day. The first Majorcan Dogue was registered in the Spanish Stud Book (L.O.E.) in 1928. Nowadays the breed is not very used as cattle dog but most as guarding dog and family pet.
