Spanish Water Dog The Spanish Water Dog is one of the Spanish breeds with highest international renown. Known from long with a variety of names, the breed has been in Spain for centuries. Soon the Spanish Water dog was extended all over the Iberian Peninsula, working beside the nomad shepherds, since one of its original job was herding. The Spanish Water Dog’s love for water and its innate capacity for swimming, as well as its coat, very similar to other water dog breeds, did the breed very popular amongst hunters and fishermen that found in the called “Turkish Dog” an excellent working animal, tireless and dedicated, able to dive into the coldest waters to retrieve a bird or collecting the nets. Over the centuries, migration shepherds tend to disappear and remain in their original places, but the Spanish Water Dog continued to be used for its traditional works but only in two specific and far apart areas of Spain: Andalusia and Cantabria. In these areas, the breed was always a reality but out of the officiality until its selection and admission as a breed in the last third of the 20th Century.
