Libro Razas Españolas

Spanish Hound The origins of the Spanish Hound are very old, being written record of its existence at the beginning of 12th Century, after the donation of six hounds to the Monastery of St. John the Baptist in Cangas del Narcea, Asturias. In 14th Century there is a more detailed description of the breed in the book “Libro de Monteria” of King Alfonso XI. After the foundation of the Real Sociedad Canina de España (Spanish Kennel Club) in 1911, the Spanish Hound was one of the first breeds to be recorded in the Spanish Stud Book (L.O.E.), all of them coming from the areas of Santander, Torrelavega, Castro Urdiales and Asturias. The north of Spain has been and is in fact the traditional area of influence for the Spanish Hound, being still used there for hunting. Out of this area, there are very few Spanish Hounds in Spain and internationally, the breed is very rare, but has some active and very interesting groups of enthusiasts. The Spanish Hound is a hunting dog par excellence, with an extraordinary ability as tracker, being able to follow asleep tracks while asleep and follow them for miles, during hours and even days. Obstinate and somewhat stubborn, the Spanish Hound is a calm dog, very closed to the people and may be a very good family pet. Las razas caninas españolas - Spanish canine breeds 252
