Canarian Warren Hound (Canarian Podenco) The Canarian Warren Hound (Canarian Podenco) has been present in the history of the Canary Islands for centuries. This breed has a close family relationship with others from the same group and similar origins, like the Portuguese, Andalusian, Ibizan Hounds, Cirnecos del Etna… and even the Basenji. All of them have the Tessen as common ancestor, very popular in the times of the Pharaohs, extended through the North of Africa and the Mediterranean area. In fact, this dog caste already appears in cave paintings in the Sahara. The Canarian Warren Hound (Canarian Podenco) is a real hunter. It can not be discarded that the first settlers of the Canary Islands, coming from the close African continent, brought with them dogs of this sort as assistants in hunting, one of the fundamental activities as well as fishing, herding and sowing. It is also certain the arrival of Hounds coming from the peninsula after the conquest of the Islands, at the same time as the rabbit and the red-legged partridge were brought in. However, through centuries and favoured by the insularity, the breed has become very homogeneous with absolutely original characteristics and with a perfect adaptation to hunting in the Canary harsh volcanic soil. The Canarian Warren Hound (Canarian Podenco) can work alone, with other dogs or even accompanied by a ferret in a typical kind of game in Canary Islands. The breed was internationally recognised by the F.C.I. in the General Assembly in Jerusalem in 1987. Las razas caninas españolas - Spanish canine breeds 191
