Pyrenean Mastiff The Pyrenean Mastiff is one of the biggest European mountain shepherds and is the only breed original from Aragon. Its natural area of job and living are the Pyrenean valleys in Aragon and the Maestrazgo area in the borders of Castellon and Teruel. In these places, the Pyrenean Mastiff worked accompanying cattle and migrating shepherds. Brave, keeper and with an imposing presence, its job was especially important fighting against wolves. Throughout the centuries the Pyrenean Mastiff were exclusively linked to its original job, but the Spanish Civil War caused a reduction of the breed in number and took it on the brink of disappearance. This situation became worse with the hard conditions of the years following the war. At the beginning of the 70’s, a small group of Aragon dog lovers started an excellent recovering work being essential the breed club foundation of the Club of breed in 1977. The Club has been since then the focus of the Pyrenean Mastiff evolution and internationalization. Nowadays, the Pyrenean Mastiff is a consolidated breed, so popular in and out of Spain and very appreciated not only for its working qualities but for its beauty and good conditions as a family pet.
